Talking about green without talking about green

A couple of months ago the New York Times ran an article about communities in Kansas that are initiating energy conservation campaigns and getting big results. The twist? They’re motivating people to turn off the lights without mentioning climate change or natural resources – keywords that are often thought of as essential elements of any conservation movement. Instead, these communities are focusing on the themes of thrift, patriotism, spiritual values and economic prosperity to motivate citizens to reduce their consumption.

Read the article, and let me know what you think. Could it be more effective to leave the environment out of discussions about conserving energy? Which audiences would find this most effective? Are there any drawbacks to this approach?
